The Challenge

The Land Rover Defender gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility. It has kept those qualities throughout the years even though the engine and design have been updated many times. The 2012 Land Rover Defender’s are installed with a 2.2L Duratorq engine that, even smaller than the former engines, still keeps up with the same power and torque output.

In this blog post we are looking into how tuning the Land Rover Defender can improve its performance. We had a customer come in with a 2012 Land Rover Defender. The customer felt that the car was sluggish and underpowered. We are going to use this 2012 Defender to illustrate the gains that a custom tune from Advanced Tuning can give.

The Solution

We decided to give the Defender a power tune to give the customer the extra pep they were looking for. We used Alientech KESS3 to flash the custom power tune into the Defenders Continental SID208 ECU. So, what exactly is flash tuning and how does it work? Flash tuning is a process where the ECU of your vehicle is reprogrammed to optimize the performance of the engine. By re-writing the tuning file in the software, the ECU parameters that govern things like fuel delivery, and boost pressure are changed and optimized to extract more performance from the engine.

We did a dyno test after we had flashed the tune. This is to ensure that the vehicle’s performance is optimized and that the engine’s reliability and longevity are maintained.

Further Benefits

Increased Power and Torque

Increased power and torque result in safer over taking and easier open road driving. Throttle response is also increased.

Years of Development

We have been tuning the Land Rover Defender’s 2.2L turbo diesel engine for years, and understand how they work as well as the limitation on factory hardware.

Emissions solutions

We have solutions for emission systems such as disabling the Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and associated DTC fault codes.
